Unfortunately, we know what to do: train the pipeline of DOT planners and engineers differently; write policy and manuals with actual residents who have expertise in their daily lives that can augment the technical engineering models; etc. It's a political will / ego problem not a knowledge gap.

Appreciated this piece - thank you! I'm curious if you have any thoughts on the role of race? Coates's anchors are Black political movements and thinkers. And the "bright kid syndrome" seems deeply connected to Whiteness and its ties to American exceptionalism.

The NJ state planning act may be interesting to look at? It created the kind of priority development areas around TODs and incentive structures for local jurisdictions starting in the 1990s.
