I sincerely think that universities should suspend their productivity standards for scientists and ask them instead to hold town halls in schools, public libraries, museums, shopping malls, and anywhere else and communicate what is being lost with the collapse of the research ecosystem.
“The ecosystem of research and the creation of new knowledge in universities has been so powerful for American prosperity, American freedom, American ingenuity. To have that disrupted by government overreach is a disaster for this country.” —Wesleyan University President Michael Roth on

Now would be a good time for US academics, and everyone else, to stop being deer in the headlights, and start organising. The traditional institutions are too weak, corrup and scared to help you. You're going to have to this yourselves, like big boys and girls and genderfluids.

It's called a polycrisis bc multiple, unsolvable crises are occurring at once. The rise of the authoritarianism, the climate, planetary boundaries, and financial markets built on speculation, not to mention the inherent contradictions of capitalism. Buckle up, buttercup.

Now I half-heartedly try to justify resources for preservation, much as a salesperson pushes a product they don't believe in. Because who really will benefit from this data? Our future techno-feudalist lords?

The other justification for preservation? The essential march forward, the religion of progress, of growth, of advancement. Ideas we need to rid ourselves of if we ever are to live in balance with nature's metabolism.

I used to think my job was important: preserving history so humanity doesn't repeat mistakes. Oh, the naivete.

I've been talking about this at mpow for weeks now.
A real possibility: your uni is classified as a govt contractor bc it takes grant funds. Govt says "everything in repository that uses 'DEI' language goes or we pull funding." Uni admin capitulates bc millions. Your work is gone.

YOU NEED A COPY.

Sorry if this overwhelms. I focused on action items
Scraping in python is straightforward. The program "reads" the website and snags data based on your instructions (the program). Overview linked.

If you are AI averse and arent adept at scraping, now is the time to set that aside. AI is good at writing basic code.

My response, to myself and others who are STILL wishfully praying that universities will stand up for us, for science, for knowledge, for democracy, despite knowing FULL WELL that they've spent all their resources the past few decades converting these universities into ROI-driven businesses:
