“As Christians we are called to be people of hope, to be those who see the signs of God’s presence in our world, communities, churches, and relationships. And having noticed, to then cherish and grow this hope; foster and practice it even against the odds.”

The events of Advent and Christmas are full of angels, messengers of God and pointing to where God is at work. +Guli reflects on glimpsing angels in the kindness and care that people show one another – do we notice them?

It is not easy to dwell with the dark side of our humanity, but Advent invites us to face ourselves as we are, reassuring us that hatred and pain do not have the final word.

“The Advent and Christmas stories implore us to soften our hearts. They entreat us to pause and reflect, to remember that behind every statistic is an individual, a family, a child even, with their own joys and sorrows, hopes and dreams.”

My chosen book for Advent considers the Magnificat. Mary recognised that the incarnation was good news for the downtrodden and powerless. The angel’s message changed Mary’s life, and her song changed the world.

“Advent calls us to face life’s realities, our mortality, hope and the promise of life in Christ, this is the time to prepare our hearts to meet Jesus.”

Today sees the start of the Season of Advent. In my chosen book, Guli Francis-Dehqani explores how listening to the music of the soul can help us to inhabit our lives more fully and enable others to live more fully as well.

A joy to watch the Advent Wreath being raised at York Minster today. It reminds us of the joy of Christ’s birth and his promised return. Thanks to the team of volunteer Flower Arrangers, whose skill and devotion each year creates this remarkable centrepiece.

White Ribbon Day marks the national campaign to engage men and boys in ending violence against women and girls. The theme of this year’s events is ‘We Speak Up!’ calling on more men to Speak Up to create a world where everyone is safe, equal, and respected.

“His kingdom is not of this world.” (John 18:36)

On this Feast of Christ the King, we are reminded that true kingship is found not in domination, but in service. May we live as citizens of Christ’s kingdom — where love conquers fear and grace overcomes sin.

I was at Manchester Cathedral today for a round table discussion on poverty - part of this year’s events marking 40 years since the Church’s landmark Faith in the City report. Its call to action remains as urgent as ever — to build a bold vision and a clear plan to end poverty.

Archbishop Hosam & I prayed at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on our final day of pilgrimage. To walk where Jesus walked & to meet with our brothers and sisters in Christ who bear faithful witness in the Holy Land today is a profound privilege.
