so difficulty in games is a virtue, except when it makes tryhard edgelords look cool, then it's all about casual easy fun times. but if it's about baby's third metroidvania, suddenly difficulty in games is a virtue again.

the argument floating around on twitter is that difficulty is a feature, not a bug, and if you bounce off or get "filtered out" by it then it's not meant to be. that argument is stupid, and is at odds with the one twitter used to make about dark souls. you're supposed to use your estus flasks!

making an easy mode or a casual mode for your game requires so little extra planning and thought that including it for gamers who are just flat out terrible at games makes them accessible. and i say this as someone who's seen some of you play video games -- it is a wonder you can hold a controller.

so phone restrictions in class grew out of the fact that they were almost exclusively used as time wasting devices, which is exacerbated by the fact that they can now provide an endless deluge of algorithmically curated bullshit instead of, you know, a link to wikipedia
