A gross parliamentary committee overreach A small group of MPs are demanding five years' worth of personal data on research-grant applicants, threatening to politicize the process An Opinion in the Globe and Mail by Andre Picard Leaders of Canada's three federal research-funding agencies were recently invited to the Standing Committee on Science and Research for what should have been a routine discussion of the state of the scientific enterprise in Canada, and how the allocation of federal dollars can promote excellence. What happened instead was a mugging by a small group of parliamentarians with a seemingly odious agenda. The committee, made up of Liberal, Conservative and Bloc Québécois MPs, adopted the following motion: That the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), "provide it with the disaggregated data of all submitted applications, whether funded or not, for all student and faculty funding programs from the Master's level on-wards, for applications made between 2020 and 2025. That this data include 1) demographic data of applicants and collaborators, including applicants' responses to the equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) questionnaire; 2) the institutions and departments of appli-cants, including the institutions of collaboration; 3) the language of the application; 4) all data regarding the type of application and project content (application year, grant program, discipline, title, summary, amount requested by the applicant); as well as 5) the identity of the evaluation committee, comments, opinions, scores assigned to applications for each criterion; and 6) the outcome of the application and the amount awarded." Yuri Knorozov, a Russian epigrapher known for his work on deciphering Maya script, holding his beloved cat, Asya, who was listed as co-author on many of his publications.

Are these cats? Regardless of what type of animal, I hope they all get better! I ask about cats, though, because we have a Luna (pic 1) and had a Yuri (pic 2) and that seemed like quite a coincidence.

Fear Guy S Duke The trip has been long the stops infrequent, and now I need to pee. Far from anywhere but full of people, a rest stop like any other. A public restroom, taken for granted my entire life, until now. I have never felt so noticed before in my life and I am not comfortable at all. The briefest of pauses as he washes his hands. A side-eyed glance at the air-dryer and muttered disapproval as I walk past to use the stall. I stay for longer than needed. Waiting, hoping he leaves and no one else comes in. When I finally get up the way is clear, the room is empty. But the fear of what may await me outside inexorably creeps through my very being. And nothing happens.
