And besides,” Iya’s tone suggested she was finally getting to her real point of concern, “You can’t spend so much time alone. You just have to join the world of the humans sometime!” Iya laughed as if in jest. Niwa felt the judgement.

Attention turned to her injuries. The most dramatic looking was the blood flowing in rivulets from her forearm. Still in shock, she took off her shirt and wrapped it around the injured limb. The arm wound was most obvious, but the more dangerous injury was her twisted ankle. Her hands wrapped gingerly around it, and she meditated with strong love, sending healing energy to her precious, life-sustaining joint. Safe at home with supplies, a turned ankle is no big deal. In the wilds, it can be life-threatening, slowing down a travel party. Alone, in unpredictable and uneven terrain, it was nearly a death sentence.

It had already been died in, by another local boy. Her friend.

Access to archival tech was limited, but everyone could attend group movie nights. When the assistant archivist brought the projector out to show picture stories, much of the village would gather to laugh in awe at the incomprehensible situations and scenes of the past. Those ancestors in their abundant videos had had it so easy. And yet, they had an astounding lack of gratitude. A tendency to focus on things they could not control. They thought themselves separate from nature.

She remembered Whitaker’s question… How could she help him bridge the big transition? Niwa projected thoughts back. "Yes, some survive. Great epidemics and war will take many, many lives. As they always have. Civilization as you know it will crumble. Even now, the climate is still… challenging. “But, nature will reclaim much of the land. In time. It is changed. Much is wastes. But humans are not big or powerful enough to destroy it all." Niwa felt for this man. Herself from long ago, preparing for an apocalypse of his world.
