Most octopuses live on the sea floor, but the Football Octopus (Ocythoe tuberculata) is one of the few octopus species that lives in the open ocean.

The females of this species have a gas filled swim bladder, which is common for fish but unique among octopuses.

A female football octopus (Ocythoe tuberculata) floating just below the surface of the water. The top of the octopus's mantle is breaking the surface. The camera is looking into its round eyes. The mantle is an ellipsoid shape and is covered in a bunch of bumps, which are larger towards the bottom. The octopus is a reddish/pink colour on the top, and white on the bottom. The octopus has 4 thin arms stretching backwards, and the arms are covered in two rows of suckers. The octopus's head and mantle form a blog that a iridescent white colour but it is is covered in orange chromatophores. It has a round orange eye. The salp is blue, translucent gelatinous, tub shaped blob. There is small purplish thing side and two black things sticking out the left side. The octopus is at the left end. It is a temporary exhibit in the Yogyo Aquarium in Shizuoka, Japan. The octopus is white with lots of red and orangish red chromatophores. Three of its arms are extending back and around its mantle. A tiny football octopus (Ocythoe tuberculata) in black water. It is not clear if it is a juvenile or a dwarf male. The octopus has translucent flesh and red chromatophores, with some iridescence on its eye and two arms. The arms are extending out it in different wavy patterns
