Mind you, I actually like The Force Awakens quite a bit.

People are quick to dismiss the Disney Star Wars trilogy as cynical slop nowadays, but I do think it will eventually be remembered as defining this entire current era of popular culture. The Force Awakens pretty much invented the "legacy sequel", and the two sequels put the whole concept on trial.

This is why I'll gladly take a plain old reboot over a "legacy sequel" in just about any case.

If you're going to keep adapting the same properties and reiterating on the same established ideas over and over again, the least you can do is making them fit the times and the medium you are adapting them to, instead of insistenly staying "true to the source". Otherwise, what even is the point?
