Dunno if you just haven't played it or what, but she talks absolutely loads in Other M. People didn't necessarily like that, but she at least didn't come over like a mute weirdo as others talked to her, inviting response, and only get stilted silence back.

I'm afraid to say this literally just turned 20 years old... I just wrote about it for its anniversary 😭

Lionhead's secret best game, and one of the greatest ever abandonware games - The Movies - turns 20 today
As Lionhead's The Movies turns 20 years old, we remember just how great it was.

This in turn somehow offers something even worse than Other M. To speak to your (excellent) article about Super Metroid,t he one time she 'speaks' in that via the written log in the opening is strong & imo really sells her as a character and the silence that then follows. But critically, she's alone

The vibe an hour with Prime 4 gave is that they identified that some fans despised Other M's chattiness & vocally emotional Samus, but also decided the Federation was critical, and thereby the (insane) solution is for everyone else to talk at her but Samus to remain silent. Just bizarre

The vibe it gives me tbh is they identified that people didn't like Other M's chattiness & emotional Samus. Fine. But they also wanted to continue to have stories with Federaton soldiers and other humans etc. So they decided everyone else should continue to speak but Samus should be silent lol

It's like, they realized people didn't like Other M's chattiness and showing of Samus' emotions. So they decided she should remain in social situations, but everyone else should continue to talk and she should be silent. It's bizarre

I think this is who Samus is to an extent, but also the situation is a factor. In Dread, she's almost entirely on her own. So again, silence makes sense. But I don't get why she'd be silent when someone is having a one-sided conversation with her. She just seems fuckin weird

My main concern in the demo tbh was not how chatty Myles was, in a way, but the fact that Samus not once responds to him with anything other than a nod. My concern in that sense is that they bring out /nothing/ in her
November 14, 2025 at 4:25 PM
Other M proves this in having a Samus that is in social situations who, yes, is a bit reticent and quiet, but talks and interacts like a human. So I dunno what Prime 4 is going for by having lads monologue at her only for her to shrug and nod only lol

It's not just the annoying NPC, it's the weird dedication to Samus - a character who 'talked' even in the opening to Super Metroid (in the sense that she writes the opening crawl in first-person) - as silent. She's silent because she's alone most of the time, not because she's socially stunted

The funny thing about Metroid Other M is beyond Samus being so weirdly dedicated to following Adam's orders she'd rather die than use a weapon she has access to without authorization, I'll honestly take a talkative, emotive, Samus interacting with characters over a mute surrounded by chatterboxes

As for TGA tickets, I think the prices are outrageous but for freelancers... nobody's reporting from inside that event anyway. It's impossible to network in there. It's a jolly. It's a frustrating act of greed from the King of Events but I don't think those $1000 tix are costing anyone any work tbh

A lot of it depends how small 'small' really is, I suppose. Like, RPG Site is a small independent & we rarely struggle for code (higher levels of access, depending on the publisher, can be more challenging). But I suppose at 3-4m pvs a month minimum, it is one of the bigger fishes in the indie pond
