Soper's right about Marx relations with materiality must be part of studying subjectivity & practical knowledge production. But, there is nothing specifically human about needing to be born, breath, eat, excrete, & have shelter. Marxists need to stress the relations, not the animal requirements.

Foster, et al., are clear in their commitments. Nature is remarkably complex while being restricted the fundamental, trans-historical, elemental, material, law-like, and non-human objects of the universe. R. Williams was wrong, it is singular and does not contain a lot of human history.

Only someone who has never spent time in, or with those from, the trenches of environmental justice movements could write this.

Of all the things O'Connor taught me, this simple little diagram has been of greatest political and pedagogical utility. Socialism is democratizing the right column (which radicalizes the left one.)

All y'all talking about contradictions between forces and relations... how many work in a manner where 1) cooperation is both a force and relation and 2) forces are defined as instruments of labor - like Marx does...

The Marxist who wrote this passage from 1988 is interpreted by other ecoMarxists as embracing or advancing bourgeois, post-materialist new social movements... smh...

I think this might say something about ecoMarxist tendencies to uncritically use terms like the Anthropocene or planetary boundaries but, heck, what do Lewontin and Levins know? Amiright?

I sometimes think Foster's disrespect knows no bounds. The 2016 article this is from engages in what can only be intentionally partial and aggressively inaccurate readings of anyone who approaches Marx at all differently than JBF and/or doesn't bow their head to the metabolic/ecological rift.
