Hey Bluesky! 👋 We’re Appalshop, a media arts organization in southeastern Kentucky that is dedicated to supporting and celebrating the cultures, traditions, and people of Appalachia through art creation and community engagement. We’re so happy to be here! 💚
A new month = a new Pay-What-You-Want album!

December’s pick is "Sycamore Tea" by the Dutch Cove Old Time String Band. Formed in 1973 by Quay Smathers and daughters June, Cynthia, and Liz, the band, named for their home near Canton, NC, played traditional folk for 20 years.

Step Back Cindy presents traditional dance in the mountains as fluid and changing with its own unique character. It's a portrait of a genre of dancing still found throughout the region.

Jean Ritchie was the "Mother of Folk" who almost single-handedly revived the Appalachian dulcimer and inspired musicians from Bob Dylan to Joni Mitchell to Emmylou Harris.

Here's a photo of her 2015 performance at the Hindman Settlement School. Happy birthday, Jean.

James “Pigmeat” Jarrett was born in Georgia and made his career in Cincinnati — but spent the years in between in a mining camp in Rockhouse, KY.

The only album he ever released was on our record label, June Appal Recordings.

On his birthday, we remember him & his music. Rest in power, Pigmeat.

For some people, this was Black Friday weekend—a day at the big box stores. For others, it was time to make things by hand.

We celebrate all artisans today!

On Native American Heritage Day, we honor the first peoples of these mountains.

We are thankful for the vast contributions of the indigenous people still living & working in our region today.

It's still common here in Appalachia for food to come from personal hunting, trapping, or butchering.

Appalachia is often whitewashed—and Appalachian roots are often purposefully erased.

Put those together & you get a history of Booker T Washington that rarely mentions he was an Affrilachian coal miner.

Rest in power, Booker T. Washington. We honor your place in our region.

Minoru Yasui fought the internment of Japanese Americans all the way to the Supreme Court, then spent his life working on community relations.

We believe in the power of community development and organizers, like Minoru.

Rest in peace, Minoru.
