Symmetry, the beauty, of the Universe uncovered by Emmy Noether [via Quanta Magazine] 🧪⚗️➕✖️⭐

"[She] discovered that #conservation laws aren’t fundamental axioms of the #universe... they emerge from deeper #symmetries."

How Noether’s Theorem Revolutionized Physics | Quanta Magazine
Emmy Noether showed that fundamental physical laws are just a consequence of simple symmetries. A century later, her insights continue to shape physics.

This video shows some atmospheric optical phenomena.
In the center you see the image of the Sun. Two sundogs glow distinctly from both the left and the right.

Mathematician, physicist, and computer scientist, the great polymath (omnimath is more like it) John von Neumann was born #OTD in 1903.

He considered his quantum mechanics contributions to be most important. To get a sense of the breadth of his work look at his Wikipedia “known for” list. 🧪 ⚛️ 💻 🧮

Mathematician John Conway was born #OTD in 1937. 🧪

He made broad and profound contributions across all of mathematics, but he is maybe best known by the general public for his "game of life" cellular automaton.

Conway passed away in 2020, from COVID-19.
