Reading today’s big NYT Magazine story made me physically sick

It details how Trump & the men he put in charge of federal research—men like Jay Bhattacharya & RFK Jr—are dismantling cancer research

Not just the US vaccine system—they’re crushing cancer R&D

Shitting on music, art, fashion, and/or games because "we're in a crisis and should focus on serious things™️" is the "I'm not like other girls" of politics. It requires you to set aside all awareness of how those topics inform and intersect with serious things so you can feel better doing nothing.

What’s extra stupid about this, is that it actually takes a ton of work, time, collaboration, funding and manpower to collect the right biometric / multimodal health data to make standardized data sets that are even useable by AI/ML

(source: I am on an federally funded project doing just this)
We’re eliminating programs that save millions of people from disease

And ending a lot of research that has cured diseases and will cure more

Because we need to funnel resources into AI

Because someday it may be able to figure out cures for disease

Do I have that right?

A colleague at Stanford’s business school used The Stanford Daily to argue—poorly—against DEI. The piece was riddled with historical errors and left one searching for fact, so I broke my public writing hiatus to respond.

I hope you’ll read and share the piece.

What DEI threatens isn’t merit. It’s monopoly.
Political science professor Hakeem Jefferson argues for DEI's importance to de-monopolizing universities.

The proposal by Bhattacharya to use data from Indian Health Services to study autism is outrageous and should be fought tooth and nail.

I have had the honor of working with Tribes on research projects. The steps for approval are many and lengthy, as they should be for this vulnerable population.

One thing life gave me is resilience.

Resilience is, far and away, the single greatest factor to anything good that I have in my life.

Someone recently asked me what I want for the kids in my life. It’s this. Resilience. Because life ain’t fair & you gotta live it anyway.
