My parents had a print of Walter Crane's "Neptune's Horses" painting hanging throughout my childhood. It is what I think of whenever I get to watch big waves cresting and breaking like I did this week out on the coast.

I don't really know anything about Walter […]

Easy hike out to the "Giant spruce of Cape Perpetua" today, estimated to be 550+ years old with a 40 ft trunk circumference. The seedling originally grew on a nurse tree, so has a tunnel under the roots. A great tree.

Dog + human for some scale (although […]

I am grieving hard for my inability to go get lost in forests since I became disabled.

What, if any, indoor trees are available for me to grow at home?

I already have a room filled with spider plants, 2 avocado plants (one trying to die), a Monstera, a snake plant, and a dracaena marginta.
I […]

For #thicktrunktuesday, Sitka spruce trees up at the Cape Perpetua scenic area "whispering spruce" trail.

Bonus second photo due to camouflaged Canada jay presence (aka gray jay, camp robbers) perched along the spruce trunk as they came in to beg hikets for […]

I have a fairly mature weeping cedar near the driveway that I've struggled to keep in good shape. In late summer I saw someone who pruned the "weeping" pieces much shorter than I had ever tried so I thought I'd see how it turned out. I like it! A neat silhouette.

First of the enormous cactus flowers is out. They always come in the second week of January. Didn't get any last year, because the poor thing suffered in a move the previous year, but I repotted a couple of months ago and it's much happier. I keep […]

My parents once followed through on a threat to have my brother and me get out and walk home if we didn't stop fighting. Albeit at the end of our (very long) rural driveway. We walked home, holding hands and crying but definitely not fighting

January tends to be Meyer lemon season at my house, overlapping with my husband's birthday. Most years I make some sort of triple lemon cupcakes, but this year I felt like going back to the basics with lemon pie.

I used 4 (small) whole lemons in the pie so only […]

We did finally have a freeze on Dec 31 here in zone 8b, the latest I can remember. A hollyhock bud unexpectedly still survived that freeze. Slightly shabby but still a little pop of pink now
