Back in the ollllld days, they used to be at least a bit better. Back in the 80s when Marvel's universe would even be stable enough for them to publish a multi-issue Encyclopedia with powers, backstories, and equipment for literally everyone in the Marvel Universe!

There's no point in reading a storyline when five years down the line it won't be part of the backstory of the characters any more.

So yeah, that kinda sucks. Plotlines being wrapped up quickly and stupidly, or being forgotten, or erased. New histories. Dumbness.

I still read my old stuff, tho.

And so nothing ever really *changes* in comics-- except for continuity! You can't have a megabillionaire tech genius build his suit during the Vietnam War when it's the 2000s now. Poor Wolverine keeps getting retconned and unretconned and reretconned.

Bruce Wayne has no idea how old he is any more.

Can't have the characters grow older and keep the same backstories, we've invested too much into these IPs! What, develop new ones? Are you crazy? No, we'll just relaunch them and rewrite the history in some way or other. No one will notice, or care, really. They'll just be happy to keep reading.
