So I sorta thought that risk-sharing in MA might have the sauce since they have a lot more options to restrict networks and just manage care more tightly. Guess not.
"Discussion In this retrospective cohort study of risk-based contracts in Medicare Advantage, we examined whether health care use differentially changed following health care organizations’ voluntary adoption of risk-based contracts, compared with trends in comparison organizations with stable contracts. Adoption of risk-based contracts was not consistently associated with subsequent changes in health care use. Findings were mixed and largely null across the 9 utilization measures and 26 low-value care measures examined, although large confidence intervals were noted. Upside-only risk contract adoption was associated with subsequent reductions in ED visits and cardiovascular stress testing. These results are consistent with the possibility of upside-only risk contracts shaping some utilization patterns in a valuable way.20 However, we did not observe similar changes for related measures (ie, advanced imaging or low-value cardiovascular testing and procedures), or for organizations adopting 2-sided risk contracts. We observed reductions in ED utilization for a subgroup of health care organizations adopting 2-sided risk contracts in later years; however, these findings did not follow the anticipated pattern of greater changes emerging with a longer duration of risk contracts."

Response to Faculty Senate Council October 21, 2025 Dear Faculty Senate Council Colleagues, Thank you for your statement. I deeply appreciate your partnership in our community and your careful consideration of the issues that face our institution and higher education more broadly. I want to respond to the two action items that the statement raises. First, I confirm that the university is not “seeking preferential treatment by our federal government in exchange for compliance with one political ideology.” Indeed, my statement yesterday said that “this decision was not made to advantage ourselves or gain any type of preferential benefit” for any reason, and we stand by that. Second, I also can confirm that we won’t sign the proposed Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education offered to us for feedback, or any document that undermines our mission or our core values, perhaps highest among these our commitment to academic freedom, access, free expression, and research integrity. We have chosen to participate in this conversation because we have been invited and with the intention of promoting our mission, values, and independence by having our voice at the table for these potentially consequential conversations. Again, I am grateful for your partnership and leadership and fully appreciate the critical role our faculty play in shaping our institution. The issues in front of us are complex and extremely challenging, and I ask for your trust that we are acting in the best interest of our university and higher education. Kinda wild how much econometric knowledge is use it or lose it. Like a year ago, I typed out this equation in Word and understood what all of the parameters meant. It wouldn't take me that long to remember everything, but there's definitely some initial shock seeing it.

One of the modestly reassuring parts of the NIH story is that there was a "correction" period where grants got out the door faster than usual this summer, to try to make up for prior delays. People that submitted to AHRQ never got that correction.

But starting in July, projects were funded at an accelerated pace, faster than what was done in prior years. Work is daunting, but in other news, I've tried to make a real effort to actually meet people and make friends in St. Louis. So I started playing in a league for Rivals of Aether 2. And this season I got 7th in the rankings!

WashU prepping everyone for some tough times ahead:
"Addressing our internal budget challenge is also a prerequisite to positioning ourselves to adapt to potential changes in federal policy. As you undoubtedly are aware, proposed federal actions in areas including research funding, healthcare finances, and changes to the taxation of university endowments have potentially serious implications for Washington University. Peer universities across the country are taking steps in anticipation of these potentially large reductions in federal support. Increasing numbers of our peers are freezing and/or reducing positions and discretionary spending, revisiting compensation programs, and considering various other cost-saving initiatives. At WashU, we must be prepared for these types of choices as well."
