Using active inference, we show the epistemically gains obtained from generating ‘mutual constraints’ (Varela, 1997) between phenomenological, computational, neurophysiological vocabularies.
By modeling the trial-to-trial dynamics of the human EEG mismatch negativity (MMN), we found a temporal dissociation between the two model families, with high evidence for neuronal adaptation to recurrent stimuli during the early MMN window and for Bayesian learning later in time (170-220ms).
