I am currently an INSERM Director of Research at Lyon Neuroscience Research Center, Inserm U1028 and the co-leader of the Experiential Neuroscience and Mental Training team (Eduwell)
We propose a modernisation of Varela’s neurophenomenology program that leverages Bayesian mechanics to provide a principled methodology for consciousness research (led by Lars Sandved-Smith, with ‪@jdkiverstein.bsky.social‬, @hohwy.bsky.social, @jdbogotaj.bsky.social academic.oup.com/nc/article-a...

Using active inference, we show the epistemically gains obtained from generating ‘mutual constraints’ (Varela, 1997) between phenomenological, computational, neurophysiological vocabularies.

By modeling the trial-to-trial dynamics of the human EEG mismatch negativity (MMN), we found a temporal dissociation between the two model families, with high evidence for neuronal adaptation to recurrent stimuli during the early MMN window and for Bayesian learning later in time (170-220ms).
