#OnThisDay in AD 79, Vespasian died at 69 after a brief illness. He reigned nearly ten years, stabilising Rome post-Year of the Four Emperors. His last words were, 'Oh dear, I think I'm becoming a god.' He was succeeded by sons Titus and Domitian.

#AncientSiteSunday - Isthmia, a sacred athletic centre in ancient Greece. Founded in the 7th century BC, it was famous for the Isthmian Games, the second most prestigious Panhellenic Games after the Olympics. These games honoured Poseidon and attracted athletes from the Greek world.

In 64 BC Zeugma [Seleukia on the Euphrates] was conquered and ruled by #Rome and with this shift the name of the city was changed to #Zeugma, in #Greek meaning bridge-passage.
#MosaicMonday - The so-called Gypsy Girl Mosaic from Zeugma depicting a Maenad. This face is all that remains of a once much larger mosaic. Maenads were mythical women inspired by the god of wine, Dionysos. Dated to the 2nd century AD.

#AncientSiteSunday - Phalasarna, a Greek harbour town in Crete that flourished during the Hellenistic period. Its ruins are located in a gorgeous area on the west coast of Crete, 16 km west of Kissamos. Remnants include the inner harbour defended by a city wall with towers, baths and warehouses.
