It is true that taxes are higher as a percentage of GDP than they have been in a while but:

1) Taxes are still below the G7 average
2) I'd argue the real problem is our incompetent, wasteful and backward-looking private sector.

Remember the time Thangam Debbonaire claimed that it was literally impossible for the government to regulate/amend contracts, all so she could defend landlords?
Asked for a response to such critics, Debbonaire told the Young Fabians online event on Thursday evening: “The policy called ‘cancel the rent’ is surprisingly un-Labour. It’s a really regressive policy. “Because, for instance, there are people who are still in work, still able to pay their rent. And if you just cancelled rent, they would also benefit and they don’t need to. “I have a flat in London, which all MPs who don’t live in London [have] – it would cancel my rent. That would be completely unnecessary, really regressive, and not targeted at the people who need it the most. “Whether we like it or not, whether we think it’s either moral or not, there is a legal structure underneath this. Which is a tenant has signed a contract with a landlord. “Even if it’s a rubbish contract, with a rubbish landlord who is charging far too much, it’s still legally binding. And just cancelling it has consequences. In fact, there isn’t such a thing as cancelling it.”

Murphy’s “personal preference” is to exclude groups such as the SWP.

The Labour question is always the same – how far can you go and still bring enough voters with you? As Labour’s divide deepens, those of us not supporting Corbyn have been assailed as “neoliberal”, “siding with the elite”, “betraying the poor”, “hypocrite” and worse. Like many Labour people, free to dream I’d go further than Corbyn: I’d go for a windfall wealth tax to pay off the deficit, make the Queen be Elizabeth the Last, abolish faith schools, private schools and inheritance, tax millionaires at 70%: add your wishlist here. I don’t know how far you can go – but you have to win power to get anywhere at all.

As someone who has tried to organise people, these talking points overlook the biggest stumbling block to mass left politics - sexist and racist behaviour being allowed to run rampant, driving people out of the movement.

The Left increasingly appeared to many working-class voters to be dominated by moralising middle-class activists preoccupied with issues of race, gender, and climate. Meanwhile, material concerns like wages, housing, and social security were neglected. The political left, having lost touch with its class base, shifted focus from economic justice to a framework of postmodern identity politics and cultural liberalism. This shift began in the late twentieth century with the rejection of historic socialist tenets like reason, universal rights, and progress, and their replacement with increasingly irrational, sectarian, and nihilistic ideas.

You could go further still and say there are around 45,000 arguments to be made that Corbyn had brought the party into disrepute, one for each Jewish voter estimated to have abandoned Labour between 2015 and 2019. But that would require the 45,000 to have been given a greater voice in political discourse than they have ever been afforded. That speaks to a problem in British public life that goes far beyond the Labour Party: the failure of the media, particularly the BBC, to convey accurately political divides when there are not “two sides” of equivalent size or worth. Despite what some have claimed, pro-Corbyn Jewish voices have not been erased from the debate. In fact, the opposite was true: they have been amplified by a media desperate for conflict. This phenomenon leads to false equivalence:

When did this happen? Before this week, I'd barely gotten any emails from them at all.
They resisted all suggestions of broadening out the group controlling the party’s launch conference, and issued emails to Your Party’s burgeoning list of supporters without Sultana’s agreement. The emails themselves were innocuous, and the proposals for advancing the new party broadly as good as they could be under the circumstances.

People are going to have to explain to me what their plan is for fighting transphobia in the political sphere, because "never join any organisation that has transphobic people in it" is not a feasible plan.

"Moral indignation" is also not a plan, and never has been.

The justice secretary has said it is "absolutely unacceptable" to question the validity of the Supreme Court after it ruled that the term "woman" is defined by biological sex. Speaking to Parliament's Human Rights Joint Committee, Shabana Mahmood said judges at the UK's highest court "provided the legal clarity in their legal decision which is exactly their job".
