After Xmas is not a bad idea, honestly. The trickiest thing about our party is scheduling. We usually do it on a Sunday afternoon but December weekends are so booked for everyone!

I love this! We’ve had a couple of attempts to create a summer-equivalent party but haven’t quite hit on the right thing yet.

What started as a way for us to meet people has become a community-building event. It felt intimidating the first time but now it just feels lovely. Sometimes people just need a small reason to come together.

I cannot emphasize enough how low-key this party is. We put out cookies, hot cider, maybe some cheese. We give people nametags. People come and go as they please. It is really not a heavy lift. But it brings people together. Folks who have lived here forever get to meet new neighbors and vice versa.

Today spouse and kid walked around the ‘hood distributing this year’s invites and one of our neighbors said “yay, holiday party time again!”

There have been a few years when we haven’t done it. I broke my wrist one year and it felt like too much. And COVID, obviously. But mostly we do it every year.

In 2016, after the election, I decided to step it up and I invited people coming to the party to bring food for the food bank. And they did! So we started doing that every year too.
