wow maybe they already bought the hardware for some of those locations that would seem a little presumptuous of them

I looked at their site, and they have 24 data centers listed under their locations. if you look only at the backup generators + batteries, they only have 120MW worth of backup power listed. seems they copy pasted the backup power info for each site, but they can't have anywhere close to 5GW capacity

honestly couldn't tell if that said 4:43 or 4:48 for a few seconds. i didn't know those "wow" moments designers always refer to means "wow I can't read that text"

I like how theirs emphasizes the monetary impact of the problem, leaving out some smaller relationships to show how core NVIDIA and OpenAI are to this mess. Contrasts with mine that emphasizes the sprawling nature of the problem instead.

Well, if you assume that the model makers like OpenAI *truly* believe that most jobs will be replaced by AI, then the obscene amounts of money spent start to make sense. I don't think they truly believe that though, so it's really unclear to me how they plan to get a return on investment.

y'all better not issue a SINGLE ticket during that time for fare evasion, that is unacceptable downtime for a payment system.
oh, before you ask, yes I always pay my fare.

yep - xAI, Anthropic, Gemini are also interconnected here and have their own circular relationships with their data center partners and NVIDIA.

I think Ed's posts on wheresyoured.at do a great job of showing where the money is coming from. the model companies (openai, anthropic) bring money in directly from consumers - but not enough to cover costs. Nvidia brings in money from its business customers. the rest of the money is from banks.
