Enjoyed some very classy - and appropriately terrifying - Bartok at the Proms last night. Also, great to see the double basses placed where they should be. In fact, I’m going to make it a condition of playing from now on. 🤣

In just over an hour, I get to hear Mahler 2 live for the first time. 😝 🎶

Final evening of the holiday: a takeaway and ‘The King’s Speech’. 😊

Next week the 2025 Proms programme is announced. So it’s time to answer an age old question: where to eat before a show at the Royal Albert Hall? The answer in this week’s review for the FT: Da Mario, a brilliant and brilliantly old school Italian where everything is right.

Fascinating parallels between English and History in concerns about the normalising of mastery as the only valid approach in education across all subject areas. Well worth a read, whatever your subject

This is so much in line with the issues with English. Discursive subjects do not lend themselves to mastery, nor affective, aesthetic, creative ones. How can you ever say you've 'mastered' a novel, or storytelling, or even grammar (when using grammar well is all about complex, contextual choices).

This year, I’m focusing much more on teaching listening skills and it’s yet another example of something I wish I’d thought more carefully about 20 years ago. I’ll get there in the end.

Taught one of those lessons today which leave you feeling that you’re doing ok. Nothing wow. Iambic pentameter. Lots of clapping, tapping and choral speech. Lots of talk. Hardly any writing. (Not that there’s anything wrong with a writing lesson, of course.)
