And at eighteen, there was still a part of him desperate to no longer be a failure or forgotten in his parents eyes. He wanted to be seen. Rebelling this way was the only way he knew how. Going on the country’s most dangerous missions would force her to watch with a careful eye. Might force her to care. And in truth, everything he did was for his parents. As much as he may hate to admit it, looking back at every choice he made was either in spite of them, or was a desperate attempt to prove something. What he was trying to prove had been so unclear to him for so long. It wasn’t that he just wanted their approval, or for them to no longer look at him like some failed project they couldn’t figure out. Despite what he may have told himself for years, the truth was, beneath it all, all he wanted was to know they loved him—for him. For who he was, not who he was trying to be.
