excerpt from the reylo fic on ao3 - the world would divide us - by pocketsofdaisy “All right,” Emil says, working the chalk over his cue stick. “You first, Solo.” But as Ben leans his large frame onto the edge of the table, lining up his shot, Emil casually adds, “If you win, maybe we’ll tip your services above thirty-percent next round, huh?” Rey cringes at the jibe. To everyone else, Ben doesn’t appear to react. He’s still fixated on the white ball, calculative, frozen in his anger. But Rey could see everything playing out on his face. The raw fury in his eyes. How the muscles in his jaw go taut. A wild animal with its hackles up. And he whacks the cue ball. Hard. It goes smashing into the other fifteen balls, breaking them apart and pocketing a solid. Rey bites back a smile. Watches him circle the table like a hawk before getting into position again. She ignores the sense of pride bubbling in her chest. It’s a teammate thing, she tells herself. That’s all. He pockets four more solids and sets up a defensive shot—clearly hellbent on obliterating Emil. At last, Ben looks up. If he’s feeling smug, he’s concealing it extremely well. “Your turn.”
