February 14, 2025 at 6:19 PM
Dorinda Keith, Canada, Brigus Harbour NL, 2011, hand-dyed wool and yarn on linen. 25 x 19 in.

In Newfoundland, Dorinda documents the devastating financial & social impact of closures.

And a ghostly stillness of boats left to decay gradually, symbols of families & communities that had once thrived.

Dorinda Keith, Canada, Into The Blue, diptych,2015, hand-dyed wool & yarn on linen. 44 x 37 in.

There is poetry, a romantic, and an intriguing spirit to the rug-hookings of Dorina Keith.

For 50+years, she has documented locations that inspired her heart & curiosity of history, culture, & place.

True still, more then ever.

Genevieve La Valle, USA, End of Act 1, 2024, hand-punched needle yarn, 20 x 34 in.

Genevieve is a remarkable storyteller who aptly crafts a sense of naivety into her works. This allows her to quietly question the complicated social, political, and domestic themes of the present day.

Shelly Nicolle-Phillips, Canada, Hank and King Wheat, 2024, Wool and yarn on linen backing. 12 x 15 in

@hookedontheprairies

Canada - strong and free!

Here- key images of prairie life—grain elevators on the horizon, a big blue sky, wide/long expanses of land, roaming livestock and wheat.

Tracy Jamar, USA, Land Parcel Quads - #3 Fly Over Series, 2009, Mixed fibres on Monk's Cloth. 37 x 37 in / 4 pieces 18 x 18 in.

Strikingly beautiful.

Masterfully integrating multiple mediums into a flowing composition.

A strong colour palette that reflects the inherent energy of her subject.

Tracey Kinsella, Canada, Cobalt Clouds and Canola Fields, 2024, wool, yarn, velour on linen, 15 x 25 in.

Canadian rug hookers on the prairies have a distinct perspective. They stand in the big-sky country, gaze in every direction, take in the horizon, and find inspiration all around.

Day 75: #HHC100days

Liv Aanrud, USA, Earth/Angels (Diptych), 2024, yarn on monkscloth. 75 x 123 in.

Can life be this full?

Liv responds… "Time becomes tactile… My textiles are an earnest attempt to slow time, to hold fast in a world that seems built to commodify and consume.’

Wise artist!

Day 70: #HHC100days

Simone Elizabeth Saunders, Canada, Olympia’s Oasis, 2023, acrylic and wool yarn on rug warp. 65 x 65 in.

Inspired by Manet's Olympia (1863), it’s a stunning recontextualization of 'the reclining nude' - revisiting the patriarchal depiction of women by 'old masters.’

Don’t know about you but I know I need a few weeks to finish a few commitments, and then it’s elbows up, forehead in badger mode… there’s a 💩 load of work to be done to pivot this world towards a new, balanced, morally strong course. Something for everyone in mustering some #benevolentcompassion ❤️

So just how much ‘fight, flight, freeze’ did we all do at that other place, which won’t be named. Day 2 since deleting my account and it feels good.

Mary Tooley Parker, USA, Ella Bendolph, Gee's Bend Quilter in Klimt, 2024, wool strips, silk sari ribbon on linen, 40 x 33in

Quilt artists of Gee's Bend, Alabama - a strong community of women who developed distinctive quilt aesthetics—bold geometrics of recycled fabric—passed through generations.
November 17, 2024 at 10:17 PM
Lu Mason, United Kingdom, Agitate, Educate, Organize, 2024, Hessian, recycled clothing cut into strips. 94 x 52 cm.

Rug hooking has a rich history of giving voice to activism (#craftivism). Lu’s call to action is bold, clear, and thoughtful for all who encounter it.
