Forgot to mention dialup! I was stunned at the speed difference when we went from 800 Baud to 14.4, and stunned again when we got 28.8, and again when we got 56k.
Broadband (initially 1Mbps down, 500Kbps up) was through our cable TV company -- we had to buy the modem and sign up in-person.

Not all of us can afford it or are healthy enough for care or are in a family situation that allows transitioning or are in a place where they can do so safety or have an in-person support network...
