he California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s (CDFW) Wildlife Diversity Program (WDP) is seeking a qualified applicant to evaluate and report on the status of terrestrial wildlife species that are listed under the California Endangered Species Act (CESA). The position works with CDFW and external species experts, state and federal agencies, tribal representatives, and the public to assess the status of wildlife species and the factors that threaten them. The position will work closely with an amazing team of skilled and friendly colleagues in the WDP, located in West Sacramento, California. This position requires an education and experience in wildlife biology and the ability to produce detailed reports supported by scientific literature explaining complicated information in a format that is easily understood by fellow scientists and the public. We are looking for someone who is passionate about California's diverse native wildlife and is willing to work hard to ensure it is conserved! Under the direction of the CESA Unit Supervisor, the incumbent will prioritize, initiate, and write five-year review reports for threatened and endangered species. The incumbent may also assist with status reviews prepared in response to petitions to list species, and in the development of recovery plans. The incumbent is also responsible for providing direction, guidance, and technical expertise to staff across the Department and will participate as a Department representative on interagency teams, technical working groups, and policy teams.

WHAT AN ABSTRACT!
Alpacas (Vicugna pacos) are reported to be the rare mammal in which the penis enters the uterus in mating. To date, however, only circumstantial evidence supports this assertion. Using female alpacas culled for meat, we determined that the alpaca penis penetrates to the very tips of the uterine horns, abrading the tract and breaking fine blood vessels. All female alpacas sacrificed one hour or 24 hours after mating showed conspicuous bleeding in the epithelium of some region of their reproductive tract, including the hymen, cervix and the tips of each uterine horn, but typically not in the vagina. Unmated females showed no evidence of conspicuous bleeding. Histological examination of mated females revealed widespread abrasion of the cervical and endometrial epithelium, injuries absent in unmated females. Within one hour of mating, sperm were already present in the oviduct. The male alpaca’s cartilaginous penis tip with a hardened urethral process is likely responsible for the copulatory abrasion. The entire female reproductive tract interacts with the penis, functioning like a vagina. Alpacas are induced ovulators, and wounding may hasten delivery of the seminal ovulation-inducing factor beta-NGF into the female’s blood stream. There is no evidence of sexual conflict in copulation in alpaca, and thus wounding may also be one of a variety of mechanisms devised by mammals to induce a beneficial, short-term inflammatory response that stimulates blastocyst implantation, the uterine remodeling associated with placental development, and thus the success of early pregnancy.

Why does Gavin Newsom love traffic so much? His reasons are his own, and we can only speculate as to what they are. All we can say for sure is that the Governor has set an arbitrary policy that will add thousands of additional cars to California's roadways. The policy is a return to office (RTO) mandate that requires all California state workers to work onsite at least 2 days per week, even though many state workers have been working effectively from home 5 days per week for the past four years, and in so doing have defrayed significant costs to California's taxpayers and the environment. As of November of 2023, 37% of state employees work primarily from home.1 Gavin's return-to-office mandate will force an estimated 90,000 state workers on the roads throughout California; that means we can expect over 30,000 more cars in Sacramento and over 7,000 in Los Angeles during peak commuting hours.2 Read About the Environmental Costs Read About the Health Costs Read About the Costs to Taxpayers Absent an operational reason to take 100% telework off the table for state employees, we can only assume that Gavin must love traffic, pollution, carbon emissions, and wasting everyone's time and money—or, at least, he must care more about making traffic worse than he does about meeting California's ambitious climate goals. Gavin, please reconsider. Traffic will never love you back.
