Data, agriculture, food, CAFOs, sustainability, climate change, water, policy. Former Michigander and Iowan, current Minnesotan. Views are my own.
It was a great getting to talk about our work at the Reducetarian Foundation Summit this past weekend in Atlanta. For 8 years @ewgofficial.bsky.social has been using satellite/aerial imagery to locate factory farms on the landscape to help our fight for clean water and healthy communities.

It was a great experience talking with people at #farmaid40 about @ewgofficial.bsky.social's Meat and Dairy Label Decoder as well as our work on nitrous oxide emissions from big ag this weekend! And getting to see some of the performers was unreal. @farmaid.org

I of course have a lot of thoughts about Midwest state fairs. But seeing this in the swine barn of the Minnesota state fair got me particularly riled up. By no stretch of the imagination does pork production lead to "cleaner soil, air, and rivers," given the extreme pollution caused by swine manure.

Ag folks often claim that farmers don't over apply fertilizer to crops because "fertilizer is expensive and farmers don't throw away money." But that is not what the data shows. According to Farmdoc, 68% of Midwest fields get more nitrogen fertilizer than what would maximize farmers' $ returns.

Interesting image showing the crops that are grown in the U.S. "Just six crops dominate U.S. cropland acres, occupying ~83% of total acreage. The most planted crops in the U.S. are corn, soybeans, hay, wheat, alfalfa, and cotton." sarahmock.substack.com/p/why-food-c...

Just released today: we have a new meat and dairy label decoder that helps consumers identify food companies and farmers that raise livestock on pastures instead of factory farms, and that treat these animals humanely. Downloadable pdf so people can take it to the store. www.ewg.org/consumer-gui...

Always cool to be watching a webinar or conference and see my work come up! In this case during the Harkin on Wellness Symposium at @drakeuniversity.bsky.social today. I analyzed nitrate and bacterial contamination of private wells in Iowa, back in 2019. harkininstitute.drake.edu/2025/03/03/1...

Farm profits are expected to increase in 2025, with net cash farm income projected to be the second highest year of the last 20 years. A large part of this increase is thanks to #taxpayers, because of #farmsubsidies being paid out through the American Relief Act. ers.usda.gov/data-product...
