This might help, first recorded in 1879 by Erskine May (although perhaps without the hyphen!)

Oaths for new members were first regulated by legislation in 1563, with the first Test Acts in the 1600s, a religious test that only Anglicans could pass, more here :) www.ourcommons.ca/marleaumontp...
