I think the issue is those who engage in fascist co-opting are used to twisting everything to fit into their worldview. If they can look at clear statistical data and wilfully misinterpret it, they can easily do the same for stories, which are subject to interpretation

Stories do have the power to teach people. Like Aesop's Fables, it's why so many stories for kids are about instilling core values
But it's harder for adults, who have to be knocked into a state of disequilibrium before they can learn

I think the problem is that people are conflating two things
Like yes, we should advocate for people of color to be cast in bigger roles in general
But no that doesn't mean that fans are willfully promoting the status quo by preferring existing characters who are well-developed

Me, watching TFA: oh I, too, am a perfectionist crushed under the expectations of my family, feeling alienated and manipulate by my boss, whose life significantly improved after finding the right person. Here's hoping that works for this guy too
