Mockup of a reddit post: AITA for predicting my aunt will die? The other day I [M20] heard the banshee, meaning someone in my family will die, and obviously it’s going to be my aunt. She’s pretty sickly and I can’t imagine any other option. But when I told my family, they called me a disgrace. Naturally I tracked down the banshee and demanded answers, but she was totally useless and couldn’t tell me shit, so I stole her comb. Sweet revenge. But I didn’t anticipate that she’d try to get it back… and when I tried to get her out of my bedroom (hello, personal space???) I accidentally touched her and she had this weird seizure. Now this creepy, undead (but lowkey hot) chick is insisting that “my touch brings her memories back” and “she craves more”. I can’t lie, I’m tempted (just because I want to find out who’ll actually die and prove my family wrong… no other reason). If my dickhead cousin finds out about this I’m totally screwed. AITA?

Before I could reach my sister, Mary pulled me back, surprisingly strong. “Don’t, she’s fragile.” Twisting in my aunt’s grip, I saw the rise and fall of her chest, faint, but alive. My world was black, a flurry of inconsequential sounds like dust in the wind, lost in the night. All I saw was Niamh, and the tiny flicker of life, when once she’d been a firestorm. Her nightshirt was damp with sweat in the center, but the sleeves had been torn away, the edges bleeding. I saw the swellings in her armpits, small and purplish like quail eggs shoved beneath her skin. They were eating away at her, burning her up.

Excerpt from THE BANSHEE OF CLAN MURTAGH: Over the next few weeks it became clear to me that something had changed in the air. Perhaps it was the hunt that had torn into Deaglán’s carefully-held control. Or perhaps it was me who was changing, my attention evolving. I no longer cared so much about the minutia of the house, or felt the sting so hard when Mary served up backhanded compliments. Because at night, I had her. Deirdre. She was a mystery I was dying to unravel. Under cover of darkness, I went to the woods to find her on that same rock, always combing her hair, always making my breath catch in my throat. We’d settled into an uneasy ritual: the both of us acting afraid, at first. But then I would press my palm against her bare collarbone, her shoulder, her arm, and feel that strange tug, like something was being parted from me while Deirdre convulsed with memories.

But she did know, vaguely, that she was split into two parts. The first part of her was burning with something akin to a fever, the man’s hand pressed against her chest, while memories flooded in. But the rest of her was here, in the house on the hill, not just remembering but living. She struggled to connect these two things—how did she become what she was, when once she had lived here? Had she been a member of this family? But that thought burned with its own sense of wrongness. The walls around her did not feel like a home. They felt more akin to a prison.
