A fine morning for #stationcoffee, off to Birmingham for a PhD viva (happily not my own)!

Many congratulations to latest PhD from the group Nick Watson who passed with v minor corrections - we are very proud! thanks to @tomhasell.bsky.social & Matt O’Brien for examining & @sgoldup.bsky.social for the collaboration (Ch 4). Looking forward to getting the papers out :)

Cat update: bloods taken, has been prescribed glucosamine/fish oil for her arthritis while we wait for results. Took one sniff of her fish oil-laden breakfast then immediately tried to bury it by pawing the nearby pedal bin. I have lost my position as Favourite Human. 🤷‍♀️

Cat update: melted. And I’m going to need to get gabapentin into her later so she is less “wriggly” for the vet to take bloods. Tips welcome…

I like this suggestion better than @barryblight.bsky.social’s…

Anyone know what this fruit tree is in our front garden? Pretty sure it didn’t fruit last year. Guessing some kind of plum, but don’t want to poison myself 😅 #gardensky

She is fine, but is clear unimpressed by the lack of catering this morning

I found a hack! you draw a curve, clicking at the points where each u-turn starts and ends. If you click 'edit shape' and 'edit points' you can tidy up the lines/make them straight. Then, there's a setting on Shape Effects -> Bevel -> 3D options -> Material which looks like a transparent box

today's small joy is: I finally managed to figure out how to draw a tube in powerpoint! The prompt was finishing off a TOC with George (not on Bluesky?) for resubmission of the review he's written with Alex and I. Hopefully coming soon...(in slightly higher resolution)

For a small moment of joy, E (just turned 7!) is learning about Keith Haring at school - today’s found artwork ❤️

I’ve had such a great time at the #CSC2025 in Ottawa & #CANUK in Quebec City - sad to be leaving Canada today! Thanks everyone for the incredible hospitality and fantastic science - so many ideas & opportunities to follow up on. Will be back! But before I leave: pancakes & proper maple syrup 🥰

For anyone who needs it, this is some very good & (imo) highly relatable communication from E (6 nearly 7). She says “I didn’t like saying it so I made a sign.”

Heading home after a great time at @rsc-pormat.bsky.social PorMat2025! Must have been practicing my jazz hands for next year’s promised karaoke…Lovely to see old friends and meet new ones, as ever - such a great community.

Ooh I actually have a better location for a change!

Ah yes! I also bought in a space-themed suggestion box (repurposed from bribing our youngest with lucky dip gifts during COVID-times potty training).

Continuing a theme of good enough, one passable bouldering-themed cake! (Don’t look too closely at the unlikely knees of the climbing figure)

One last day of holiday celebrating the 10th (TENTH) birthday of our eldest - she’s a daily revelation and we are so proud & grateful. artist, historian, comedian, gamer, athlete and a million other things. (Maybe this means I will finally feel like a grown up?)

Back in the valleys for my traditional late December pastime: running in photogenic weather, contemplating the year.

Grant writing, end of year school admin and the rush to Get Stuff Finished do not mix well. It’s 17:35 and I only just noticed this. No, it was not a style choice 😂

Setting off to #MASC2024, looking forward to catching up with friends & taking in all the excellent #supramolecular #chemistry. Obligatory #stationcoffee for @timeasun.bsky.social

Hey @barryblight.bsky.social I can flash blue routes now! Only took me 9 months to go back after you visited us but now making some solid progress 😄 #chemistswhoclimb

Hello all the new chemists! I’d like to say something intelligent but it’s been A Week, so all I have to offer is the art the 6 year old handed me at school pick up today

Finally got round to this, first time I’ve tried painting a person - aphantasia does not help with this, but I think you can tell what it is supposed to be at least 😂
