When I served in the majority on the North Carolina Supreme Court, the court held that extreme partisan gerrymandering violated the state constitution. That ruling was rooted in the principle that voters should choose their representatives—not the other way around.

Primary elections for Mayor & City Council are October 7th! I used early voting, there was no line & plenty of parking. Tomorrow is the last day for early voting. Remember you can register to vote at early voting. For info on local NC elections visit ncsbe.gov.

The North Carolina Supreme court matters. We rule on cases that determine whether you have fair representation, whether your child will have access to an adequately funded, quality public education, and whether the state can protect our clean air and clean water.

This Labor Day, I am thinking about the generations of working people who organized, stood together, & fought for better conditions, not just for themselves, but for all of us. They demanded respect for their essential human dignity & recognition of their contribution to our economy.

On this day in 1920, the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution was ratified, prohibiting individual states from denying women the right to vote. We must never forget that the fight for suffrage was indeed a battle and one that widely left Black, Brown, and Indigenous women behind.

On this day in 1993, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, a child of immigrants, was sworn in as the second woman to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States. She was already well known in that courtroom, having previously argued six cases before the court. 🧵
