The misreading of the threat was especially obvious to those at big public universities in purple and red states. 20 years ago I started being careful about what I put in emails because our state legislature periodically did open records requests targeting ‘woke’ (then liberal) professors.
Well worth reading.
The obvious point here is that some presented "woke" as an existential risk to speech and academic freedom, and some people warned about govt censorship as a bigger threat.
The former were not just wrong but paved the way for govt censorship.
