It’s April, the trees are starting to put out their leaves. This tree is a Japanese maple and this is a shot from underneath looking up into a blue sky. The leaves look incredibly young and bright. Green is the theme.

Here it is!
An enormous sumo wrestler faces down a much smaller opponent. The large wrestler is the Hawaiian rikishi, Konishiki. His opponent was Kirishima (not our current Kirishima!).

Konishiki was enormous. If you’ve ever seen the photograph of a massive rikishi facing another guy (who is completely dwarfed), that’s Konishiki.

However, the top guy back then was Chiyonofuji ("the Wolf", because cold, calculating and at times, unbeatable).

Retired though, so no flag.

This guy was amazing. However, all of my choices are still wrestling nowadays. But I’m going to allow it, because one of the flags is his nephew and so it’s close enough. Hoshoryu looks like a villain with his scowl when you’re new to sumo, however he’s a softy outside of the dohyō, and I adore him.
Hoshoryu looking mean and moody. The text says “this is just my resting ozeki face”. A baby is winning a stare down contest against Hoshoryu.

Basically when I was a relative young one, Chiyonofuji blew me away when I saw him courtesy of Channel 4. I have loved sumo ever since. Every tournament has an array of flags outside the venue, and you can buy tiny silly ones - and I’m now proud owner of 5 tiny flags of 5 amazing sumo rikishi.
Sumo yokozuna,Chiyonofuji. He looks strong and is wearing a kesho mawashi with thick rope denoting his status.
