I think the previous producers were genuinely sick of the whole thing and were happy to kill him off, then sell the franchise and make it someone else’s problem.

It’s like trying to build a narrative arc across all episodes of Tom and Jerry. You just don’t need it.

I think Bond works best with cartoon or sitcom logic. You don’t want/need any narrative hangover from previous episodes. You just want a new version of the thing you watched last time.
