I think the previous producers were genuinely sick of the whole thing and were happy to kill him off, then sell the franchise and make it someone else’s problem.

I think Bond works best with cartoon or sitcom logic. You don’t want/need any narrative hangover from previous episodes. You just want a new version of the thing you watched last time.
