172. The Wolf of Wall Street (rewatch): first watched this in theatres when I was a film novice but thought to give it another chance with more perspective to see if my stance would change, but nah I still think it’s too decadent and passive in its critiques still, but very fun debauchery. 7-8/10

171. The Crowd (1928 film): yep, incredible. The form is timeless in its brilliance, crazy work for a silent film from the 1920s, a fantastic look at American exceptionalism and the falsities of the American Dream. Doesn’t switch gears perfectly in approach, but still quintessential. 9/10

170. Judge Priest (film): has some especially dicey politics which even the remake couldn’t fully excise, not for everyone, but for those versed in Ford’s filmography, it’s another complexly layered examination of the pains in pursuit of community & morality even amidst more dubious spaces. 8/10

169. Final Fantasy Tactics - The Ivalice Chronicles (game): should’ve trusted my teenaged instincts, this was mid as hell. Really primitive gameplay with difficulty you either break or get broken by & a TREMENDOUS grindfest; overcrowded story with ho-hum characters & scattered focus. Overrated. 6/10

Video came on suggested for me comparing the Gozyuger openings, just noticed the blacked out bit of Sumino while it shows the other characters in those ring images. Yeesh. youtu.be/yh8mjyVeI2o?...

I’ve been going in a descending order according to the current RYM user average (mostly just to get a feel for what’s considered “the best” before I gradually get thicker into their stuff) so I am about to get to White Light from the Mouth of Infinity

…You know what? I think it’s easier to throw shade at Garp sticking around with the Marines despite the atrocities that have happened around him and how much he had or had not intervened, but I think we should REALLY be putting Sengoku on fraud watch. Dude approved like every shitty decision to-

Happy belated birthday to this dead set cunt. Who else would have the audacity to name one of his characters “Coom” (Qum)? Diabolical game, no one else like him.

168. The Wire - Season 2 (TV): maybe a pleb take, but I think it’s a big step down from S1. Just don’t think the drama is rigorous enough to capture much momentum, it has two speeds: snail’s pace & Mach 5 for when it wants to dole out so abrupt major developments, so it feels very uneven. Dece. 7/10

167. Chainsaw Man - Reze Arc (anime): yup, this is Chainsaw Man done right. Expressive, funny, tender, epic, this is how you do CSM’s pulpy black tragicomedy vibes. Good CSM content adapted well, had a blast. Also the AkiAngel fanfic stocks gonna shoot through the roof after this, goddamn. 8/10

166. Once Upon a Time in the West (film): feels like it takes parts of each of the Dollars trilogy and remixes them into something newly exciting with a splash of Fordian nuance. Plotting can be a bit confusing, so I’ll need to rewatch to feel more firm but the style is undeniably god level. 9-10/10
November 2, 2025 at 9:19 PM
165. Days of Being Wild (film): an earlier WKW film, likely more modest of a production than what would be to come but plays into it as something more dreary than the heightened sensuality of his later stuff. Plot feels too wispy even still, not quite at his best, but it’s still WKW. 7-8/10

164. 3 on a Couch (film): worst I’ve seen from Lewis so far, very bland & unfunny, arguably super sexist, & generally plays at a modest key antithetical to how Lewis operates best (elaborate productions and zaniness to distract from uninspired direction) so you’re left with just mediocre noise. 5/10

163. American Sniper (rewatch): was my 1st Eastwood, went into it with bias & unknowing of his approach at the time, so I wanted to revisit WRT his greater filmography & it’s maybe not AS bad as initially, but the least interesting of his greater American examination biopics. Clunky & confused. 5/10

162. Kamen Rider Majade - Girls Remix in Halloween Party (toku): Koyomi is back from the dead! Again! And now they have to fight! Some of the girls get extra powers for…reasons (guess to be explained in the sequel). Weird seeing the little girl from Kiva grown up…and is older than me!? Eh. 5.5-6/10

161. The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly (film): ngl, thought it was a downgrade from its predecessor. Better controlled than Fistful of Dollars at least, but starts slow, has some repetitive habits, &less of a mounting sense of tension & intrigue, kind of just cyclical double crossing. Pretty. 7-8/10

Halloween tends to bring me bad luck anyways, so I’m at a bar with my old man’s hat watching Game 6 hoping it brings some good luck instead 🙏🏻

Keeping with the current news, I’ll share my current Sentai rankings again (still a work in progress).

mydramalist.com/list/LOPaYMN3

Would definitely rec the top 10 (counting both seasons of Akibaranger as one entry averaging out between Dairanger and Carranger).

160. Midsommar (film): thought inclusion of Pugh & inherent levity of its brighter atmosphere would give this a leg over Hereditary, but it’s somehow worse. Terrible handle on tone, themes, character subplots, images, the works. Aster constantly tells you how to feel, slog of kooky BS. 3/10
October 28, 2025 at 4:19 PM
159. Chainsaw Man Season 1 (anime): unfortunately echoing the usual sentiments for this - mismatched direction lacks broader modulation for tone to build tension properly because of the constant foreboding & it butchers the black comedy. Some cool bits in isolation but the manga is better here. 7/10
