⏺️ This raises questions:
❓Why does the PIC allow LDA, but not IM?
⏺️ Also discussed:
– The idea that TRANSFER is asymmetric (optimal only for the SEM component).
– Variation concern the SYNTAX >> PHON mappings.👋👋
Let’s discuss 👇

⏺️ AGREE operates under MINIMAL SEARCH (closest c-command) and the Phase Impenetrability Condition (PIC).
⏺️ The PIC follows from TRANSFER.
⏺️ Transferred material remains accessible, but cannot be altered. This allows AGREE to value upwards PROBES (thus LDA).

⏺️ CGO 2019 also discuss:
– MERGE is a "replace" operation.
– There is a WORKSPACE (WS): [ . . . ]
– This means MERGE (X,Y) yields [(X,Y)] (within the WS), and not [X,Y, (X,Y)]
– The asymmetry between the INTERFACES
– The role of INTERNAL MERGE (movement)

⏺️ The paper revisits the Strong Minimalist Thesis (SMT):
→ The language faculty is an optimal solution to interface conditions.
→ Simpler syntax = better mapping to CI and SM systems
⏺️ A slightly different version of the SMT is offered in Chomsky et al. (2023).

⏺️ This might provide a principled explanation of many classic syntactic phenomena:
✔️ Why subjects move to SPEC-T.
✔️ Successive cyclic movement.
✔️ Raising to subject/object phenomena.
⏺️ Of course, problems remain. 2️⃣ above revamps some version of Spec-H agreement.

⏺️ CGO 2019 adopt a refined version of Labeling Theory (Chomsky 2013, 2015).
⏺️ There is a Labeling Algorithm:
1️⃣ In Head–XP configurations, H is the label
2️⃣ In XP–YP, the label is a shared feature or movement kicks in (for interface reasons, pace Kayne 1994/Moro 2000)

⏺️ CGO 2019 assume Chomsky's (2013) approach to labeling (pace Collins 2002): Labeling is not part of MERGE.
⏺️ When MERGE combines 2 objects (X, Y), a label seems to be needed at SEM, but SYNTAX doesn't seem to require it it. So, is it part of BARE OUTPUT CONDITIONS?

⏺️ Derivations proceed by PHASE.
⏺️ The notion of WORKSPACE is introduced.
– vP and CP are phase heads
– Once a phase is complete, it is sent to the interfaces (via TRANSFER)
→ This explains locality, opacity, and derivational constraints (like PIC, see below).

⏺️ CGO 2019 propose a minimalist view of syntactic computation.
🔺 Central claim:
🧠 SYNTAX is compositional and cyclic.
→ It builds structure via MERGE, and hands it off via TRANSFER to the interfaces:
(i) CI (Conceptual–Intentional) and
(ii) SM (Sensory–Motor)
