We often have low winds for a week in winter. To defeat those we need 7 days. And the cost of wind solar (with a sub 50% capacity factor and 20-25 year lifespan) plus batteries will always be more expensive than nuclear with 80+ year life and 90+% capacity factor

How much would it cost to have batteries for 7 days’ uk supply in the middle of winter, in particular after we transition heating and transport to electrical power?

You sound like Nick Clegg in 2012 complaining that if we build nukes then they won’t help us until 2022… if only we had a whole fleet of new nukes in that energy crisis!

But that 1GWh solar/battery system can hold less than 20 minutes of HPC 3.2GWh generation. And at 1,800 hectares it occupies 3,600% more land than HPC at under 50ha. It’s still nowhere near a replacement for the ability of nuclear to displace fossil fuels
