As the article and paper says: "while rigorous work can go unnoticed."

That's the one useful metric - an Altmetric score of 0 or low number highlights there is a lack of communication and that outputs may be shared poorly.

Altmetrics highlights where the attention is, but importantly isn't.

The article cites a paper titled: 'High social media attention scores are not reflective of study quality'.

They never promised or meant to be, but they may highlight useful engagement, good and bad, especially relating to the topic or with regards reputation.

As the piece explores, there are flaws and I think the likes of @altmetric.com and @overton.io are aware this.

Altmetrics are an indicator and depending on what they are, can be really helpful in highlighting impact.

You can't take them on face value, as you can't with traditional metrics.

That's not how it works - you don't even have to be on social media to gain @altmetric.com attention. It is about capturing the conversations and attention around research. The most important of that being policy citations and news coverage which are much greater than social media posts.
