What’s that they say about ‘all work and no play’?

When I worked for Sheffield I never really gave myself the breaks when I needed them, it came at a cost.

Now I am a freelancer I take time out when the sun shines (today) and work when it rains.

So we went to Chatsworth Xmas Market for cheese

The glorious colours on this morning’s walk to the village cafe. The shades of brown, green, amber, orange and of course the red.

I found this old photo of myself and I don't know what I find more astonishing, that I could do these kind of moves or the sheer amount of brown in my parent's living room.

How does research move beyond academic journals to influence policy, practice, and public understanding?

I'll be chatting with Francesca Brazzorotto from @kargerpublishers.bsky.social on Tuesday 4th Nov as part of their People & Science Live series.

The joy of taking my daughter - now she is 18 - to the yearly fantastic horror fest that is Celluloid Screams comes at a price. It now costs me twice as much to go 😂 #Halloween

Spent some of today digitising old photos I’d borrowed from my adopted sister. This is me and one of my older birth brothers - not long after this I was taken from my family and it was half a century before I saw him again. Life throws those curve balls at you.

If you go down to the woods today…

I met up with a few old ex-Sheffield colleagues for tea last week and was gifted something very special from my old colleague Prof Simon Dixon.

For over 6 years we ran a secret art exhibition in the department - called SCHARRT. He had compiled the works into a book.

Back at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School to talk about alternative indicators of scholarly interest, AKA Altmetrics. Going to discuss how to navigate and critique the data, what it tells us and about @altmetric.com @overton.io and how it can be used to make research more open and communicated.

More post Sheffield fun.

A marvellous weekend in the woods at a small but perfectly formed festival in The Strines watching Gruff Rhys et al

A nice way to spend my first day post Sheffield Uni. Hopefully a win for Derbyshire

Feeling a tad emotional and sentimental today. Last actual day working for the University of Sheffield and SCHARR at Regent Court. A journey that really started in 1997 when I was a journalism student in Minalloy House, just located next door to the place I spent the last 24 years.

The perfect way to spend a Friday, watching my Derbyshire try and knock the leather off Worcestershire’s ball at Repton.

Chesterfield to Sheffield in a few seconds

After 24 years in the same job and probably last day in the office in Sheffield I decided to treat myself to a bus ride and grabbed the best seat.

Since I last looked nearly 6 months ago, 6 universities had actively quit X, now there are 14. Another 8 ceased posting updates in February, but had not actively said they had quit. Now that has risen to 32 accounts. That makes up for 46 universities out of 140, 32.9%. The scales are tipping.

A third of UK universities have now ceased posting on X.

I've updated my data to see whether they are adopting Threads and/or Bluesky as a microblogging alternative.

The simple answer is that they are, slowly.

I'm in the process of clearing my desk and many drawers out ahead of leaving the University of Sheffield after 24 years here.

Here are two documents from 2010.
One success and one failure.

I'm just running an update on my UK university and UK-facing research organisations data as to the current situation with regards to social media in HE. The data largely looks at 7 platforms, with a focus on X and where organisations are switching to in terms of Bluesky, Threads.

If you are a research team or organisation who has a bit of underspend before the end of July. Then consider investing some of it learning hands on skills and tools to communicate your research.

Animations, podcasts, infographics, blogs, social media and more.
