A little explanation of the moody Tar Valon opening shot to
@thewheeloftime.bsky.social S3 and some of the choices we made.

7/ The internal glowing viens were a book description we also conceptualised. @framestore.bsky.social contributed the idea of seeing Moiraine's bones silhouette through her illuminated skin
April 2, 2025 at 3:07 PM
6/ A Sakarnen prop was used on set, containing dozens of LED lights and used in CU shots of Moiraine to cast interactive light onto her hands and face. It helped make the glowing Sakarnen feel more 'real'. The Sakarnen prop was replaced with a CG version in post
April 2, 2025 at 3:06 PM
5/ Lastly, the Channeling / Sakarnen behaviour was fully realised after discussions I had with Rosamund Pike about her performance / movements, and her thought processes that went into that
April 2, 2025 at 3:06 PM
4/ As this didn’t exist in the books, we had to visualise it all from scratch. Inspiration came from light painting photos, art installations of wind blowing through huge sheets of plastic and the volumetric sculptures of Janet Echelman
April 2, 2025 at 3:05 PM
3/ A lot of these decisions were made during the post process, building on the stunning footage captured along with details in the script

2/ The resulting final shots from S3Ep5, some minor adjustments made from the original concepts. Main challenge was figuring out how to work our way up to the fully expanded Sakarnen power shot as Moraine Channels into it

1/ Moriaine's Sakarnen flex in the Aiel Waste (S3Ep5). How we visualised the whole sequence, beginning with these 2 concept images

The question has been asked. Not counting any from our main group of heroes WALKING through the bottom centre of frame, there are 8 AIEL warriors visible in this shot from S3Ep5 (not all seen in this still frame). Go

Anyone spot the nice touch added for us by the VFX team
#oneofusvfx for this Waygate shot in S3Ep2? As the gates grow and form, a shadowy outline of an (upside down) Trefoil leaf draws itself on the steps/ground, part of the structural design itself

1/ S3 Male Channeling - An Evolution of Saidin. Part of the S3 VFX Channeling upgrade included revisiting the Male version of it, especially the black Corruption which mixes within it.

Illuminators. The 'hidden Gray Man' of ep5... just not as discrete.

1/ My favourite Rhuidean VFX shot we worked on from S3 ep4. I love incredible, minimalistic environment photography, and that was our inspiration here. Simple yet effective.

Two big influences on me whilst doing the Rhuidean VFX work for WOT S3. Caspar David Friedrich's 'Wanderer above the Sea of Fog' and Claude Monet's foggy London paintings from the early 1900s.

Probably obvious though?

Since you’ve been so nice I’ll give you an exclusive: S3 debuts the ‘Stunning’ weave, delivered by Siuan to Joiya and Amico when she frees herself of their Shielding weave towards the end of the 301 cold opening.

I know you guys have previously discussed what weaves the show has used.

5/ We were eager to introduce the 'weave' aspect of Channeling into S3, structures formed with the magical threads to create a One Power event e.g a Fireball. Whenever reading the books there were descriptions of 'weaves' or 'flows' being used to create a One Power event
March 17, 2025 at 8:53 PM
3/ We wanted our threads to be light emissive as it signifies a power or energy, plus it looks effective on screen. Each ethereal thread is broken up with different levels of opacity along it, supplemented with luminant 'accents' that add variation, interest and flowing movement

WOT S3 Channeling - A Thread (literally)
1/ Developing the 'Channeling' was an important aim for us in S3, a magic system so unique and specific to the show. Improving it was one of our main objectives since joining the show during S2.

The lighting of full CG shots does fall under the remit of VFX though, which is where we have the artistic influence. The opening shot of S3 would be such an example, but we do play off the lightning from practical shots around it. However, it was so wide, we could go to town more on that shot

1/ Continuing the theme of VFX involvement in the WOT S3 Sneak Peak, I present the Entrance Hall of The White Tower, a near full CG shot. We again called on the abilities of Outpost VFX to show an area of the WT never seen before in the show #TheWheelOfTime #WoTSkies

When Mother gets mad.

Channeling 3.0 going down well. Upgraded threads and flows with ‘weaves’ now introduced. Wait until you see the Male Corruption.

All expertly crafted for us on the show by the one and only @Framestore. Take a bow

The WOT S3 Sneak Peek seems to have gone down well?!

Our VFX dept were involved from the very first shot with this striking full CG establisher of Tar Valon, setting the darker tone for S3. Much appreciation to the artistic talents at #OutpostVFX for creating it.
