An illustration from an early edition of Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey, on display at Harewood House, Yorkshire. We all know the feeling!

BBC News - 'We took over our library when the council shut it'
www.bbc.com/news/article...

I was one of those "fierce librarians," who apparently sat on a high platform. I only had to beat people occasionally when they failed the "clean hands" inspection, so the report might be a bit exaggerated.

We have lost Chris Priest. He was one of those writers I admired greatly as a novelist but was always happy to sit down and chat with at a convention. Many of us have lost a friend. I just hope the British literary establishment knows what IT has lost.

Nice to see ms material from Ursula Le Guin, Susanna Clarke, Mervyn Peake, and Diana Wynne Jones at the BL! (And a couple of things we used in the Science Fiction exhibition😄)

Exhibition -- highly recommended! I spent two hours wandering around taking notes of things to read and follow up. Shame the BL is now affected by a cyberattack, so bring cash!

There is a campaign out of Tufton St to undermine the National Trust. If you are a member, you have until Friday to vote (see next post for who NOT to vote for). To avoid splitting the vote, vote for the NT's preferred candidates

It was such a joy to be on the Advisory Board for this exhibition (with @neilhimself.neilgaiman.com, @aliettedb.bsky.social, Roz Kaveney). Tanya Kirk, @mjrsangster.bsky.social and the rest of the curatorial team did a wonderful job. Please go see it if you can.
