November has been almost as productive as October in terms of rare and scarce birds added to my year list. Clear favourite was my discovery of a second Pallid Swift at Foreness Point in Kent on 8/11, superbly captured here by Oxon birder @tmbirding.bsky.social. Such a buzz . . . #ukbirding

A comparison of Hume’s Leaf Warbler (Wells Woods), left, and Yellow-browed Warbler (Holkham), right, from the last two days. Subtle but distinctive differences between these two similar Phylloscopus species supported by their quite different calls. #NorfolkBirding

Fabulous views of this female King Eider (perhaps better called a 'Queen' Eider) in Scalloway Harbour, Shetland this morning.

Just had enough time to dash to Lancashire to see the returning Bewick's Swans at Thurnham. When I saw them in February they were a mile out amongst 400+ Whoopers, but today they were close in and happily grazing. Reduced to tiny numbers, these are now the only two present. #ukbirding #birds

Ten Years in West Dorset is less a blog post, more a chapter in my life. Hopefully an inspiration for those who prefer the paths less trodden. Bit of an epic, so well done if you get through it all.

Spent 4 hours pursuing Bedfordshire's first Hume's Leaf Warbler around Marston Vale CP before I finally caught up with it and had good (if brief) views. It calls regularly, but is highly mobile and elusive, showing fleetingly at best. Loved the challenge it presented, though #ukbirding

It's nearly 18 yrs since I found a Franklin's Gull at Torr Res, Somerset. Back then I spent 100s/hrs yearly scanning gulls at the res, landfill and fields. Today's Vatersay bird was easier, landing on the road in front of us as we headed for the beach...to go check the gulls. #BirdingScotland

On a trying day when England surrendered the first Ashes Test to Australia and Brentford plucked defeat from the jaws of victory at Brighton, I was relieved that the Wallasea Island Red-breasted Goose at least played ball on a raw morning in Essex #ukbirding

Rarity finders: Black-faced Bunting in East Yorkshire

A quiet late-autumn visit to Spurn took a dramatic turn for Andy Mears when a 'dull Reed Bunting' at Middle Camp slowly revealed itself to be something far rarer:

In response to the most common question I've been asked in the last month, here's a blog about my initial thoughts about doing a Big Year. There will be more when I've had time to reflect more. #ukbirding #birds
Bee-eater from my patch in April was one of the highlights of a packed year.
The Big Year: was it worth it?
A few people have asked me recently about doing a Big Year.  In some ways it's easier than it's ever been to achieve 300 species of birds in...

My bird of the year (so far)! Spent today putting a frame on this beauty - the magnificent Loch of Asta Siberian Thrush by the hugely talented Phil Jones. A fitting memento for what has been a very special year. #ukbirding

As a teenage birder, I recall seeing flocks of 30 or more Lapland Buntings at Burnham Norton in Norfolk. A subsequent change in status means they are now a scarce treat, like this attractive male near Leasowe lighthouse, my first sighting of one this year. Pic: Sean O'Hara. #ukbirding

Once a classic trans-Saharan migrant, Spotted Flycatcher is beginning to rewrite its migratory map by wintering in Europe with greater regularity:
Spotted Flycatcher joins growing list of migrants overwintering in Europe
New research shows that Spotted Flycatchers are increasingly overwintering around the Mediterranean rather than migrating to Africa, as Europe's milder winters reshape bird migration patterns. Using two decades of eBird data, scientists found that southern Iberia and Mediterranean islands now provide suitable wintering conditions, marking a major shift for this classic trans-Saharan migrant.
