Postcolonial statecraft; contentious politics; political belonging, deliberative practice. All this, and the polycrisis. Views not my own.
The folks at Globalizations have managed to get their hands on one of those devices from Wm Gibson's novel The Peripheral that allows you to send messages to people in the past. This one arrived today, 19 September from, let me see, 23 October 2025.

Reviewer 2 is presumably in a different stub.

Who is going to play Bix Caleen's daughter in the inevitable #Andor sequel?

I’m pleased with #Andor writers’ decision to leave behind Lucas’s infantile Good v Evil framing and to explore, instead, the idea that rebellion is political

This post flitted through my feed yesterday and I find it keeps nagging at me. Is this idea - that 'struggle is not necessary in a healthy society' widely shared in progressive circles in the USA? I find it utterly astonishing, but the poster seems to think it uncontroversial

What astonishes me is how deeply baked in (and how unconscious) the cultural & emotional repertoire of radical Protestant reformation continues to be - and how the same cycles repeat again and again

Yup. I fully expect future executions of AI to purposefully but judiciously introduce clumsy phrases, basic misunderstandings and outright howlers the better to attain verisimilitude.

Strikwerda's account of the collapse of a global order -- here, by the advent of world war in 1914 -- keeps throwing up present day resonances

Strikwerda's account of the short-sighted and zero sum assumptions of the German political elite in the run up to the Great War make salutory reading today 🍊
April 8, 2025 at 1:44 PM
Strikwerda's analysis offers an interesting critique of the just-so stories told by so-called realist accounts, which see great power competition as a self explanatory account of the origins of war
April 8, 2025 at 1:42 PM
Strikwerda: The late 19th century Eurepean return to imperialism was based, not on rational calculation but on irrational fear and competitive grandiosity
