If it’s any consolation it’s also world toilet day. Both were actually yesterday (in our time zone).

A provocatively named coal ship just got provocatively tagged in Newcastle harbour.

I just realised that this is a measure of bedload, certainly an alternative visualisation. The dredge David Allan runs 7 days a week keeping the port of Newcastle clear for coal ships. 10 x 1,100 m3 loads each day.

And Kooragang Island is 10k? years of sediment deposition.

Should we be praying to the spirit of Gough for Labor to be more ambitious?

Found this vinyl gem in an ‘antique’ store @mikecarlton01.bsky.social

No record player unfortunately.

Democracy Sausage day in Australia today where we number every box to register our preferences (although not necessarily in hopscotch order).
Thankful for an independent electoral commission and preferential voting.

Somewhat balanced by the editorial…

The kids get it.
Grandson and I wrote a message for the future on bamboo strips at an art installation at Sydney MCA. With no prompting from his green granddad he wrote 'stop pollution' and 'look after the invironment'.
Problem is, its 12 years before he can vote.
We're letting them down.

This is disturbing but I take consolation in all the local and global communities that are focussed on one or more of the planetary and social boundaries. There are things I can do to support, unite and expand those groups.
Also … here is my cup of tea.

Can't let nuance contaminate the, ummm,.... 'debate'.

The impact of your teams work isn't immediately visible as it lies in the influence it has on the research and actions of many many others. Note the citations (I'm one of the 1915). So, thank you.

probably about as abundant as the Hunter Valley in Australia, but a friend needs confirmation

I suspect that the only people who get energised by, or have been exposed to, the stripes are those in the progressive left. In US that is ~8% of the population according to the Hidden Tribes of America survey - summarised below [Reference: hiddentribes.us ]. Maybe a similar ratio in many countries.

1,000's of protestors are currently energised by the blockade of Newcastle port (our coal exports = 1% of world emissions). Protected by a massive government activated police presence the coal ships sail by unhindered.
A global analogy really.
One day either sense or the earth systems will prevail.

I was proposing an idealistic goal we might aspire to in response to my realisation of how little those dams contribute for all their destruction.
Although slow, renewables are growing and have been since 2008 (see electricity graphs, eastern states). CO2 emissions are even more useful.

Technological progress:
1) The Gordon & Pedder Lakes hydro scheme that dammed a pristine SW Tasmanian wild river system in the 1970s
2) The New England Solar Farm with similar peak power output.
Each contribute 0.4% to Aus energy needs.

Ecological progress:
Restore the wild rivers?

Recently added some letters to my name for research into an immersive artwork that encourages system thinking. The world and its challenges are complex. We need a system-based mindset and language to navigate uncertainty and develop holistic solutions.
