Bizarrely, Trump’s budget request tries to turn virtue into vice, calling heritage matching funds for tribes, states, and local governments “highly duplicative” & arguing projects are “often of local, rather than national, significance.” Telling the stories of all Americans is a feature, not a bug!

A hallmark of the US approach to heritage enshrined in the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 is that not only national monuments but locally significant places in every community enrich us thru cultural, educational, economic & energy benefits. Trump’s 2026 budget would wipe that away.
