Shit talk the Browns, people love it here!

I think that's true, but I also believe the reporting that Gabriel was Stefanski's pick, and he was the driving force behind moving on from Mayfield, so he doesn't really get a pass either in this mess.

I cannot think of an example to point to that should engender confidence that they can fix that position this off-season, either from a personnel or coaching perspective.

Could there be a greater indictment of the guys in charge than that?

They have shown a distinct inability to evaluate and develop the quarterback position since they arrived.

The only success they have had is with fully-developed veterans.

And they've also consistently chosen late draft picks over maintaining depth at the position (Huntley, Dobbs, Pickett, Flacco)

I think Judkins, Sanders, and Isaiah Bond put paid to the idea that Berry has learned his lesson.

Thank you very much for the kind words!

The reason I am optimistic about this move is that there is an opportunity here to marry the Browns considerable (and wise!) investment in analytics with greater football expertise.

Capitalizing on this opportunity is not a sure thing, given the ownership, but the door is open for something better.
November 6, 2025 at 10:00 PM
The Rams, Lions, Vikings, Commanders, Bills, Ravens, Jaguars, and Seahawks have all married analytics to a broader understanding of what it takes to to build a team.

The Browns have continued to insist that +EV moves will eventually come out ahead, despite the aggregate never adding up to a team.
November 6, 2025 at 9:58 PM
But overall, the big picture strategy of the football side has been misguided and contradictory for a long time.

In addition, the Browns have been surpassed by so many organizations in terms of innovation and forward football thinking because they have been stuck in an analytics silo.

HOWEVER, DePodesta was an active impediment to any improvement because his primary goal was keeping his job and avoiding blame.

The Browns analytics approach has given them some advantages. We now take it for granted that the head coach will usually make optimal 4th down decisions, for example.
November 6, 2025 at 9:53 PM
For the Browns, the biggest problem has been & continues to be that the ownership group has not made good hires to lead the football group. They do not know how to judge people or their football knowledge.

That flaw isn't going to change and makes whatever comes next very dicey, as always.

His most marketable skill is convincing people to give him a job and look at someone else when he fails.

You may scoff, but look at how far it has gotten Bari Weiss. If you know how to suck up to the dumbest richest guys, you can retire very comfortably.

Good riddance to Paul DePodesta.
November 6, 2025 at 9:49 PM
I doubt DePodesta's considerable ego would let him be fired or resign, so he had to find another job to forestall those outcomes.

That this is his career trajectory tells you everything you need to know about his acumen and strategic thinking. He has consistently failed but dodged getting fired.
