I remember seeing "Barefoot in the Park" at boarding school, and skipping out of school on a Satrurday night to go and see Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid with these guys in 1968, it's me on the left, in white jumper.

I'm not sure this provides an explanation. Rather like Sir Richard Sykes' belief that the genomic revolution would lead to 'smaller, more effective clinical trials' I suspect that the reality will be far from the ideal. From a 2005 PWC report 'Pharma 2005: an industrial revolution in R & D'.

It's not new. This is an extract from a letter to the HR dept of a large Pharma company in 1990 complaining about an advertisement in the New Scientist seeking statisticians. The author was a biochemist.
